Learn how to incorporate texture into your mosaic work using common mosaic materials
Date: Friday and Saturday 30-31 January 2026
Time: 10am - 4pm
Fee: $390 (includes materials)
One of the most exciting elements of mosaic as an art medium is the ability to incorporate texture into a design. Are you wanting to learn how to create texture in your mosaic art, but aren’t sure how? This is the workshop for you! Learn about a variety of way to use the design element of texture in your mosaic art with visiting instructor Margo Anton.
The class will begin with a lecture on the vast variety of ways to create texture and ideas for thinking outside the box with using common mosaic materials. Students will work on two small mosaics over the course of the two days, giving them an opportunity to try out more than one textural concept in their work. Inspiration for these mosaics will be taken from photographs provided by the instructor (students may use their own suitable photographs), or can be an entirely original creation of the student.
These ungrouted mosaics will be created using cement based adhesive, and will be created on 15cm by 15cm or 15cm by 20cm substrates. A monochromatic palette will be employed, thereby encouraging the focus to be on texture and tone to create the mosaic, rather than hue. The materials used in this course will encompass smalti, stained glass, vitreous glass and more. Students will be encouraged to use the common mosaic materials in new and exciting ways to achieve the textures desired. Use of the hammer and hardie will not be covered.
All materials are provided in the materials fee, but participants may choose to bring items from home to supplement or support their chosen designs. Students should expect to leave this class with a good understanding of ways to incorporate texture into mosaic, as well as the ability to do so.
