Based on Margo Anton’s Mosaic a Day project and blog, this hands-on workshop is perfect for those needing a nudge to get back in the studio, those interested in trying new materials, or those looking for new ways to express themselves in mosaic. With much of the art world geared towards producing larger pieces, particularly in mosaic (commonly used for installations), working small may seem an oddity. However, incorporating small piece into your studio practice can have many benefits , including lower price point for sales, low time and cost commitment, and a more rapid increase in skill level of the artist.
The workshop starts with a lecture about the Mosaic a Day project and the incredible discoveries Margo made while working small. After delving into the various benefits of small scale mosaics, she will discuss design issues, sources of inspiration, and tackling procrastination. Following this lecture with lots of examples, a demonstration of her approach to starting a “Mosaic a Day” will take place. Participants will then create two small scale mixed media mosaics with a variety of materials, some of which may be new to the participant. If necessary, use of the hammer and hardie will be covered.
As students work, Margo will give impromptu mini lessons based on the projects everyone is working on. These can include thoughts on andamento, cutting demonstrations, working with cement mortar, and so on.
Participants should expect to break through lots of artistic blocks in this class! Learn to use new materials, to combine and use materials in unexpected ways, to incorporate focal points, and to think outside your usual box.
