Micromosaic items, including jewelry, have a long and illustrious history! Learn how to create micromosaic jewelry using a combination of modern and traditional techniques in this full day workshop. The day begins with a short lecture on the history of micromosaics, and continues on to discuss jewelry bases, adhesives, and filati, the Italian hand pulled glass threads made from smalti. Designing techniques for micromosaic will be introduced and thoroughly explained. The cutting of filati will be demonstrated, and practiced. There will be no instruction on the pulling of filati. Micromosaic laying techniques will be thoroughly covered, and students can expect many great tips! Class participants will receive lots of individual attention as they work on silver plate micromosaic pendants using strictly filati. Students can either work with a design of their own, or with one chosen from a selection of templates. This workshop should particularly benefit participants of all levels who are wanting to learn a fascinating historical art form, want to add mosaic jewelry to their repertoire, or have interest in learning to work in micro scale mosaic.
Students in this class will be provided with most materials and tools to create their micromosaic pendant. Please bring a pair of wheeled nippers (the closest touching wheels you have) and your favourite tweezers. There will be spares available
