Create a small mosaic while learning all about smalti!

Date: Sat and Sun April 13/14, 2024
Time: 10am - 4pm
Fee: $300 plus $60 materials fee

Smalti, a form of enamelled glass, is the creme de la creme of mosaic material.  Types of smalti were developed in the Roman times of mosaic making, and it has been highly sought after ever since. Learn all about smalti—and how to work with it—in this two day, hands on workshop.

The workshop begins with a comprehensive introduction to all things smalti. We will explore the different cuts of smalti, the various types available, how it’s made, how and where to purchase it, and more. You’ll learn tons about the different ways to use smalti in mosaic, and lots of examples will inspire your creativity.

Following the presentation, Margo will demonstrate cutting and working with smalti, and help you plan your pieces. After some practice cutting, work will begin on your 15cm by 15cm (or similar) mosaic pieces of your own design. We will be using both Italian and Mexican smalti in this workshop so you can get a feel for using both. We will be cutting the smalti with wheeled nippers, but the hammer and hardie will also be demonstrated so you get a full understanding of this unique mosaic material.

As you work on your smalti mosaic, you will receive lots of individual and collective guidance from Margo. Expect to leave with a finished mosaic (or with enough smalti to finish on your own), an appreciation for this stunning material, and a new trove of mosaic knowledge!

Please bring wheeled mosaic cutters and tweezers if you have them.
